SIMRAN'S GOALS
1. Have fun- COMPLETED! I have had heaps of fun designing the canstruction and working with my friends and Hayley and Ms McEvoy! 2. Make friends from other schools- COMPLETED! At the training day we made friends with Endeavor Hills! 3. Use all of the 16 Habits Of Mind- COMPLETED! We had to use many of the HOB to plan and practise the canstruction! 4. Be organised and manage my time- COMPLETED! WOW!! This was probrably hardest to complete of all of my goals, I had a lot to do at home and had to manage and make time for everything. I had to be organised and that was dfficult as well!
5. Learn how to write a Wiki- COMPLETED!
I have achieved this goal because I now have this Wiki!
The Launch
Today the 10th of August we had our official launch for CANstruction 2009. I did the opening speech explaining what the training day was and a little bit about what CANstruction is too, then Millie presented her power point which turned out to be FANTASTIC! After that Darren talked about bringing cans, next Charlo showed everyone the posters we are putting up around the school and gave one to all of the teachers, after that Lachie spoke about our theme which is " My Home Australia" and at the end Ms McEvoy wrapped everything up. It was a success!! GO TEAM SCORESBY!!!!!
Identifying a need!
To identify a need first of all you need to ask around with the people who were affected, take in the situation and what is happening at the moment. You need to place yourself in their shoes and try and feel what they are feeling right now. Many people need things so secondly you need to choose who you are going to help, how you are going to help them and how this will affect their lives. For example if I went to South Africa and I went to a town where their school doesn't have enough supplies I would ask how many things they need, how many of each thing they need and then think to myself " How will doing this affect their lives/ help them?". The main things people need are: food, water, suitable shelter and money. These things are quite easy for people like us to find who live in a world full of opportunity, for others they might have to build their own homes out of planks of wood and leaves found outside. Others may not be able to do even that and have to seek shelter behind other homes, walls and even hills. Sometimes people have all of these things but lose them in things like floods, earthquakes and fires, this could be even harder to live through because at least you had all of those things but now you are left with nothing. This is the case here in Australia, when something bad like Black Saturday occurs many people need help. There are many people who inform others of what they have lots of and what they need more of. Sometimes they send the message out through other people or other times they tell reportors to report on T.V. There are many different ways to identify a need you just need to observe and listen to find out.
The Biggest Problem!
The biggest problem that we faced was making a curve go outwards without making the structure fall apart at the slightest touch. We tried many things and came out with the solution. We made trios of the cans, put stickytape on top of each can and then we put paddle pop sticks on top of that and those had sticky tape on top of them as well. This made the structure stable and the curve was pretty awesome too! We have overcome the biggest hurdle and we now just have to sprint to the end!!
